MyLincoln Touch Upgrade now available!

Over the next few weeks, Lincoln will be mailing the Performance Upgrade USB drive to all MyLincoln Touch owners with an upgrade-ready system.

Owners who receive the Performance Upgrade in the mail have everything they need to get started. Those who have vehicles equipped with Navigation will also receive a replacement SD card, which is required to complete the upgrade.

So why upgrade? Some of the benefits of upgrading the MyLincoln Touch are a faster system, easier controls, tablet compatibility, simpler graphics, enhanced voice recognition, and support for audible.com audiobooks. And if your vehicle is equipped with Navigation, the upgrade will provide you with updated map views, richer graphics, more 3-D landmarks, and photo-realistic freeway images.

If you haven’t received the upgrade yet, keep calm! It may still be on its way! Upgrades will be sent throughout the month. If you haven’t gotten it by the end of the month, call Lincoln at 800.392.4040 for further assistance.

Or, if your vehicle is not equipped with Navigation, you can use your own USB drive to download the upgrade now. But you will need an empty USB drive with at LEAST 2GB of space. The download requires a SYNC Owner account, which is free to all SYNC owners!

Here’s the steps to take for the download that is sent to you:

1. Start your vehicle and turn on your audio system. Both must remain running throughout the upgrade process, which could possibly last up to 60 minutes.

2. Insert the Performance Upgrade USB drive into your vehicle’s media hub. The system will upgrade automatically.

3. After the installation is complete, touch “OK” and remove the USB drive.

4. Remember, if your vehicle is equipped with an SD Navigation system, replace the SD card with the one you received in the mail to install new navigation map data. After you have finished the upgrade, you’ll need to pair your phone, download your phonebook, and re-enter any saved Navigation points. Also, be sure to bring the USB drive back to your computer to confirm your upgrade using your SYNC Owner account.

Lincoln at the Chicago Auto Show

In this video, Megan Gillam, marketing director for Lincoln, talks about what the new MKS means for Chicago.

The big Lincoln sedan has been given a mid-cycle refresh that includes upgraded power, a newly refined suspension and a restyled beak. The 3.7-liter V6 now boasts 300 horsepower, 26 more than the 2012 model. Despite this welcome infusion of grunt, Lincoln tells us that this big sedan now gets three more miles per gallon. A base V6 MKS will achieve an estimated 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The EcoBoost 3.5-liter engine will continue to output 355 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.

MKZ Sedan Concept

Another auto show another promise from Ford to reignite interest in its underperforming Lincoln brand. This time the place is the upcoming 2012 Detroit Motor Show and the product is a concept model that will preview the next generation of Lincoln’s MKZ mid-size sedan.

Along with the new study, Ford says it plans to highlight the relaunch of its struggling luxury brand with a new display area at the Cobo Center in Detroit, which will be 50 percent larger than last year and feature an art gallery with art and decor by artist Chuck Hoberman.

“This is the biggest statement Lincoln has ever made at an auto show,” Max Wolff, Lincoln’s director of design, told the Detroit Free Press in a statement. “Our NAIAS display represents more than a vehicle debut. It represents the reinvention of Lincoln.”

Though Lincoln didn’t reveal any more details on the MKZ study, the mid-size sedan will share its platform architecture with the next Ford Fusion that will debut in production form in Detroit and its European counterpart, the Mondeo. And like its Ford sibling, it will continue to use a front-wheel-drive platform with all-wheel drive likely to be offered as an option.

Lincoln has said that it will introduce seven brand new or significantly updated models by 2014. At the recent L.A. Auto Show, the company revealed the facelifted versions of the MKS sedan and MKT crossover.

Lincoln +1

Although Lincoln is heading in the right direction, we feel the need to take another step towards upping our game..

In order to do that, Lincoln is planning on planting some unique technologies that could and hopefully will be seen in future models. Technology such as a push-button shift control, fully retractable all-glass roofs (instead of sunroofs), and continuously controlled and active suspension. All-wheel drive will also be an option for all models.

Lincoln MKT

The Lincoln MKT is a  polarizing vehicle.  With looks that have been described as a mix between a hearse and a beluga  whale, you either love or hate the chrome-toothed crossover. Unfortunately for  Lincoln, it looks like most people don’t care much for MKT. To try and  reinvigorate the MKT lineup, Lincoln today has announced that the 2012 MKT with  Ecoboost will now cost $3000 less than before.

At $46,295, the new pricing on the 2012 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost makes it  the same price as the now-discontinued all-wheel drive  3.7-liter V-6 equipped MKT. That’s also only $1985 more than a top of the line  Ford Flex Titanium, which sells in much greater numbers than the Lincoln MKT  line. Both the Lincoln MKT with Ecoboost and its Ford Flex Titanium twin are  equipped with all-wheel drive and the same 355-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo  V-6.

So why the $3000 price drop, when there’s no change in content? When asked  for comment about the price drop, Lincoln responded in an emailed statement by  saying, “The price and equipment of the MKT have been realigned for model year  2012 to remain competitive in this premium segment and [for] attracting the  intended target customers, who [will] appreciate elegant styling, the power to  decide in favor of powerful and fuel-efficient EcoBoost performance ([which]  always comes with all-wheel drive), excellent functionality, and the latest technology.“

What Lincoln is essentially admitting is that the MKT is a slow seller. With  polarizing looks, a high price tag and the same content available in its  better-looking (and cheaper) Ford Flex sibling, Lincoln dealers  can’t pay customers to take the MKT off of their lots.  Last month, Lincoln  only managed to sell 399 MKTs. In contrast, 2719 Ford Flexes found homes  last month. The price adjustment likely brings the MSRP more  in-line with what dealers were actually selling EcoBoost MKTs for, so it only  makes sense for Lincoln to have lowered the price, possibly due to dealer  pressure.

Inflatable….seat belts?

Yes, you read that right.

Ford will be making their new inflatable seat belt an option on Lincoln Vehicles starting Summer of 2012.

This contains an airbag that deploys in the event of an accident, and it expands to cover five times more of the occupant’s torse than a traditional seat belt would. Because of this, this seat belt will help reduce the risk of injury to backseat passengers.

This development actually won Ford the gold medal for Applied Technology at the 2011 Edison Awards, and is currently an option only in the 2011 Ford Explorer. So far, data has shown that 40% of Explorer sales are to parents who opt for the rear passenger safety feature.

The best part? Back seat passengers will actually be encouraged to use their seat belts. This inflatable contraption is padded, and feels more comfortable, making passengers more inclined to use it. In America, only 61% of rear passengers use seat belts, compared to the 82% (which should be 100%!) front passengers.
